DESCRIPTION:For residents of the Eastern Shore of Maryland living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)\, support is primarily coordinated through specialized local non-profits and regional health systems. While the region has a high rate of SCD\, it often faces a “service gap” due to its rural population. \nEastern Shore of Maryland Sickle Cell Disease Association (ESMSCDA): Based in Salisbury\, this organization was founded by Mashonda Ward to address the lack of local resources. They provide: \n\n\n\nAdvocacy & Support: Identifying service gaps and providing emergency financial assistance for medical or utility bills through partnerships with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.\nCommunity Events: They host the Annual Sickle Cell Awareness Month Walk in September at the Centre at Salisbury and a charity golf tournament in June.
